Go to a car wash
Commercial car wash services use less water and recycle the used water. If you must wash your car at home, use a hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle. A standard garden hose uses about 10 gallons of water per minute.
Flush wisely
Toilets account for about 30% of the water used in the home. Every flush uses almost 2 gallons of water. Older toilets can use up to 7 gallons per flush.
Drink tap water
Stay hydrated and always choose tap water or filtered water over bottled water. Tap water is tested regularly for safety. Storing tap water in a reusable glass or metal water bottle reduces the risks from plastic and minimizes the environmental impact of producing and disposing plastic bottles.
Use a pool cover
In our hot climate, evaporation accounts for an inch of water loss every week. A pool cover will minimize evaporation which can save up to 7,000 gallons of water a year.
Maintain hearty houseplants
Grow succulents! They are nature’s water conservation plants as they don’t like to be over-watered. They tolerate drought and heat well. They probably like to be talked to as well.
Buy recycled goods
Water is used to produce everything you buy. Cut down on water waste by purchasing used clothing and accessories.
Reuse your clothes
Your clothes will last longer the less they are laundered. Blue jeans and outer wear don’t need to be washed after each use.
Use water-saving appliances
Be sure that your appliances are water efficient which can save 30 to 50 percent of the water used. Run the dishwasher when it’s full and don’t pre-rinse the dishes.
Fix the leaks
Fix even small drips around the house. Leaky faucets and running toilets can waste up to 200 gallons of water a day, quickly adding to your water bill.
Take a quick shower
Challenge yourself to a 5-minute shower which uses 10 to 25 gallons of water. It takes 70 gallons of water to fill a bathtub. This will also save on energy costs as heating water accounts for about 20% of your electric bill.

Reducing Your Water Footprint
Consumer products are an often-overlooked source of water use, accounting for up to a third of most people’s water footprint. Buying less of everything—from household goods to electronics —can dramatically decrease your water use.
Plant native
Native plants are already accustomed to the climate and natural rainfall. In Collier County, drought-tolerant plants, such as goldenrod, milkweed, southern magnolia and sabal palm, can survive with less rainfall and watering.
Set your irrigation timer
Be sure to water your lawn only on the days and times allowed. Even-numbered addresses can irrigate on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Odd-numbered addresses can irrigate on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Irrigation is not allowed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. or at any time on Friday.
